New Directions in Infant Nutrition:
Prebiotics + Probiotics for Improving GI Health & Immunity
Definitions:
Probiotics are live bacteria that are administered in some form to a subject. They survive in the stomach and take residence in the intestines for some time. They are live bacteria that are all derived from bacteria that have been cultured from the intestinal contents of humans.
Prebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrates that when ingested go to the colon where they are fermented by bacteria and their effect is to foster a microbiota similar to that of the human breastfed infant.
