Objectives:
Upon completion of this web-based course, the participant will be able to:

    • Describe the common causes and presentations of atrial fibrillation and techniques for early diagnosis/screening to reduce risk of stroke and hospitalization.
    • Determine why and which patients with atrial fibrillation require chronic anticoagulation therapy.
    • Describe the new pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches for prophylaxis and management of atrial fibrillation to reduce risk of stroke.
    • Discuss the scientific merit behind a treatment strategy of rhythm control versus rate control.
    • Develop a referral process for rural clinicians for proper management of atrial fibrillation to prevent stroke.
    • Implement current guidelines for referral and evidence-based strategies in rural practice for the management of atrial fibrillation to reduce stroke and hospitalization to achieve better patient outcomes.

Biosketch : Peter Kudenchuk, MD, FACP, FACC
Seattle, Washington
Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Washington. Dr Kudenchuk is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and clinical practice, and recognition as being among the “Best Doctors” in Seattle and in America. His research interests pertain to resuscitation from cardiac arrest, and cardiac electrophysiology.
